Two children are expected to be OK after separate near-drownings Sunday afternoon.

The first child, a 5-year-old boy, was found unconscious in a swimming pool at 2016 E. Village Green Circle (14830 South) in Draper, said Unified Fire Authority firefighter Ben Sharer. Lifeguards spotted him about 2:45 p.m., pulled him out and performed CPR, he said.

"The lifeguards acted quickly enough ... and were able to get him out and breathing," Sharer said. The child was walking when paramedics arrived, but was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center as a precaution, Sharer said.

The second near-drowning happened about 30 minutes later at a community pool in Kaysville.

At least a dozen people were enjoying the sun and swimming at the Sunset Equestrian Estates community pool at 769 Western Drive when someone noticed a 2-year-old girl face-down in the pool.

Kaysville police Officer Brandon Woolf said it was unknown how long the girl had been in the pool before she was discovered.

"No one saw how she got in the water," Woolf said. There was no lifeguard on duty.

If it had not been for a next-door neighbor who administered CPR, the child may not have made it, police said. The woman has a medical background as a nurse, according to neighbors.

One witness said she was driving past the pool about 3:13 p.m. when she heard screaming. Janina Lindsay said she turned her car around, hopped the fence and called 911.

"The mom and dad were just screaming and [a woman] was doing CPR," Lindsay said, adding that the child was not breathing for a couple of minutes. The woman is a neighbor who was also at the pool, she said.

The girl suddenly coughed up fluid and began crying just as police arrived. She was flown to Primary Children's Medical Center as a precaution and is expected to recover.

Neighbors say the parents of the girl were visiting family who lived nearby and they decided to go for a swim.
