The folks at Holmes Homes have never built a house in a week before. But with help from a few hundred volunteers and the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" team, they're about to do just that.
Construction will begin June 23 on a new home for a "deserving family" at Rio Tinto's Daybreak development in South Jordan. Rio Tinto is donating the land. The building materials will also be donated. And Ty Pennington and the "Extreme Makeover" team, along with Holmes Homes, will take care of construction.
"Daybreak came to us and said, 'Can you pull this off?' " said Patrick Holmes, co-owner of Holmes Homes. "And we said, 'Sure.' "
The folks at Daybreak were also caught off guard when a producer from the TV show called them out of the blue.
"He said, 'We're looking to do a show in the Salt Lake area,' " said Cameron Jackson, marketing manager of Kennecott Land. "They needed some place with a lot of land."
This "Extreme Makeover" won't feature a remodel or a demolition/rebuild, but a house that will be built from the ground up.
The family's identity will be revealed when construction begins on June 23; the home is scheduled to be completed on June 29. "We think it's a great cause," Holmes said. "So we jumped on board with it."
Jackson added: "At the end of the day, what you really end up getting out of it is that good will and that giving back."
The Daybreak episode will air sometime this fall. After eight seasons on ABC's Sunday-night schedule, "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," is moving to Fridays in September.
