Highland • The Herriman boys' soccer team scored a goal with 10 minutes left on the clock and held on to defeat Lone Peak 1-0 on the road in Region 4 action Wednesday afternoon.

The victory solidifies the Mustangs in first place in the league standings, and they will be at least three points ahead of any other team regardless of the outcome of Wednesday's other matches.

The contest was as close as expected from start to finish. The defenses for both squads played superbly, limiting offensive opportunities.

Knight goalkeeper Tanner Rasband made several spectacular saves for the home team but didn't have much of a shot at the game-winner.

In the 70th minute, Herriman relayed the ball forward into the main goal approach area. Sophomore forward Isaac Chance passed it in the direction of the left sideline, where sophomore forward Dallas May was positioned with a couple of defenders.

"After Isaac played it, the ball just missed the head of one of the defenders," May said. "It bounced once or twice and I was able to get a foot on it."

May debated in his head whether he should make a shot attempt or pass it. "I decided to hit it," he said. "I'm glad I did." With solid contact, the ball snuck inside the near post before Rasband had a chance to react.

"This was a big game," May said, adding that he was comfortable after the score, his sixth goal of the season.

"I was pretty optimistic," he said. "We have a good back line, and I was confident they could hold them." Primary defensive duties fell to seniors Sam Marler, Devin King and Jaxson Ruff in the contest.

Mustang goalie JD Myers said the defense in front of him was the biggest factor in preserving his sixth shutout, especially during Lone Peak's multiple offensive surges.

"Our back line was phenomenal," he said. "They've really been communicating well these past few games and our chemistry has been good the whole year. This win wouldn't have happened without them." —
