A 34-year-old Highland man turned himself into police for driving while intoxicated Friday, Lone Peak police reported.

According to court papers, the man — who faces felony DUI charges — called police dispatch to report a suspicious person — himself — who was intoxicated and driving westbound on 11000 North in Highland. The man said he had stopped and needed officers to come.

When police arrived, they found the man sitting on the passenger side of his car, with the door open and the car's key in the ignition, turned to the accessory position. The driver's side door could not be opened because it was screwed shut.

The officer who responded said the man had bloodshot, glossy eyes, a dry mouth and slurred speech. The man told the officer that he was drunk, and the police should know about it.

At the police station, the man failed several field sobriety tests. When asked to walk nine steps, the man reportedly told police that he couldn't and was afraid he would fall. He also questioned why the police where testing him when they knew he was drunk.

The man told police he shouldn't have been driving and made a mistake. He also had two prior DUI convictions in the past 10 years, making the current charge a third-degree felony.
