Former Utah Jazz player and UNLV star Armen Gilliam died Tuesday night playing basketball at an LA Fitness gym in Bridgeville, Pa. He was 47.
According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner Office, the cause of the death is not known and they are waiting on an autopsy.
"The Hammer" played 13 seasons in the NBA and was the No. 2 overall pick by the Phoenix Suns in the 1987 Draft. During his professional career Gilliam played for the Suns, 76ers, Nets, Bucks, and Jazz.
While at UNLV he led the team to a 37-2 record and a Final Four appearance in 1987.
Gilliam averaged 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds during his NBA career. He played for the Jazz in the 1999-2000 season, averaging 6.7 points and 4.2 rebounds.
