The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources caught a bull moose Saturday morning that wandered into a Layton cul-de-sac on Deere View Drive near 2000 East.
Residents were hosting an annual neighborhood parade when the moose was first spotted near the start of the parade, quickly dispersing families with children and prompting calls to Layton City Police and animal control.
Curious neighbors poked their heads outside; some were part of the parade, and others were scouting the scene for the moose.
DWR and police were quick to respond, shooting the moose twice with tranquilizer and finally cornering it on a backyard basketball court.
Mitch Lane, a sergeant with DWR, said it's not uncommon for moose to wander into residential areas.
"On an average year it's quite common," he said, "especially along the Wasatch Front, anywhere where there are corridors or streams where they can come down from the foothills."
Wild moose can be dangerous, Lane said, and although they are not necessarily aggressive animals, their attacks can be deadly.
After the animal was sedated, DWR, police and neighbors pulled the moose into a nearby trailer, where residents had an opportunity to see the animal up close.
Brian Kohl, who has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years, said he has never seen anything as large as a moose in the area.
"It's just exciting when you wake up on such a beautiful morning," Kohn said. "It's one of the reasons you love living in Utah. And then you get an extra surprise, a bull moose wandering around the neighborhood."
The moose will be tagged and released into the wild.
