Third District Judge Sandra N. Peuler will retire at the end of the year after more than 17 years on the bench.

Pueler was appointed to the judgeship by then-Gov. Mike Leavitt in May 1994. Peuler served as the associate presiding judge and presiding judge over the 3rd District, which includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties, for six years.

She was named the state's judge of the year in 2007.

Peuler's retirement is effective Jan. 1, 2012.
