Peter Hodgson, the executive chef at Salt Lake City Marriott University Park, is one of 20 chefs from around the country to be inducted into the American Academy of Chefs — the honor society of the American Culinary Federation (ACF). To become a member, chefs must have worked in the profession for at least 15 years, with at least 10 of those as an executive chef at a full-service restaurant. Prior to working at the Marriott University Park, Hodgson was executive chef at The Coventry; Larry H. Miller Restaurant Corporation; and Provo Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. A Taylorsville resident, Hodgson is a former president and active member of ACF's Beehive Chefs Chapter. He has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, including ACF President's Medallions in 2004 and 2008, and the 2008 ACF Western Region Chef Professionalism Award.

Summer market

Sunflower Farmers Market, 656 E. 200 South, in Salt Lake City, will host a summer farmers market Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Purchase craft items from local artisans, sample grilled fruits and vegetables, and meet with representatives from local food organizations and nonprofits. Simply Scotch

Seats are available for the "Scotch made Simple" class being offered Wednesday at Silver, 508 Main St., Park City. From 7:30 to 9 p.m., participants will sample Scotch from the Highlands, Islay, and other regions as well as learn the difference between blended, 12-year-old Scotch and a single malt Scotch whiskey. Beer-pairing dinner

Enjoy a five-course beer pairing dinner, featuring brews from Wasatch and Squatters, on Thursday at The Silver Fork Lodge, 11332 E. Big Cottonowood Canyon, Brighton. Funeral potato showdown

"The Best Utah Funeral Potatoes" contest takes place Saturday at the Downtown Farmers market at Pioneer Park. Contestants should prepare their favorite funeral potato recipe using at least one Utah's Own Product (the product list is available at utahsown.org.) Bring the ready-made dish to the Utah's Own booth before the 11 a.m. judging time. First place receives cookware and a $75 gift card to Associated Food Stores. Gift cards also will be given to second- and third-place winners. All cook-off participants will receive a T-shirt and reusable shopping bag. Celtic fest in Logan

The 3rd Annual Cache Valley Celtic Festival & Highland Games will be held Aug. 27 at Logan's American West Heritage Center. Gates open at 9 a.m. and include a full day of activities including live Celtic music, Scottish and Irish dancing, bagpipe bands and Highland athletics. Pipers will compete during the day, while clan and Welsh society booths will present family and Celtic history. The festival will conclude with a concert from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students ages 12-18; children 11 and younger are free. Concert Only tickets are $5.
