The Salt Lake Tribune's Gina Barker attended Jonny Lang and JJ Grey's Sunday concert at Red Butte Garden, and here is her review:

Remember the opening song to Rosanne?

OK. Now forget everything that makes you think of about harmonicas, saxophones and the blues in general.

Blues got a healthy dose of energy this weekend.

Jonny Lang headlined last night's Red Butte Garden Concert Series. And with a voice like the one this Grammy-winner has, the sold-out crowd that packed every square inch of usable space in the amphitheater made sense.

He's only 30 years old, but he sounds like he's a seasoned, war-torn veteran of the music business who has seen it all. And really, who has it all figured out with a Grammy in hand at 30? Well, Lang, it seems.

If you like blues, you'll like what Lang is bringing to the table. He's a natural with the guitar and his style manages to be refreshing while still paying homage to the classics. His music has moved between blues, gospel and rock.

"This is the concert I've been looking forward to all summer," said Salt Lake City resident Karen Morgan.

JJ Grey and Mofro opened the concert, bringing a bit more country grit, but still very much in the blues family. Grey's song "The Sweetest Thing" had some slick lyrics. Example: "I never saw a sunset woman until I met you."

Sunday night's concert was packed with a wide range of music lovers. Guys who would look more comfortable on a Harley were lounging, beer in hand, on the grass while picnicking families cracked a bottle of wine for the grown-ups and apple juice cartons for the kids.

Lang and Grey, while not exactly easy listening, bring a relaxing atmosphere into play. It's usually true of Red Butte concerts that any show is a good time, a way to grab onto the fleeting summer weather. But both musicians had a well-rounded mix of the die-hard fans swaying to lyrics of the South and those just kicking back andtaking it in.

Lang released his first live album in April, "Live at the Ryman," and has been touring the U.S. as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour. Grey will be releasing a live DVD in September entitled "Brighter Days."
