Sandy police seized about 100 marijuana plants and arrested one of two suspects in a late Tuesday night raid.

Sandy police Sgt. John Arnold said a citizen had spotted the potted pot plants in a field behind the REI store at 230 W. 10600 South on Monday. Police then staked out the site via video cameras and waited for the suspects, who allegedly had been visiting the marijuana grove regularly to water the plants.

About 10 p.m., officers spotted the men on video and closed in. A 42-year-old Sandy man was arrested, but the second male suspect fled into the night and remained at large on Wednesday.

"They were bringing in more plants to the location, and water," Arnold said. "The area is very secluded. These plants could have been there for quite a while."

The arrested man was booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of second-degree felony obstruction of justice and first-degree felony selling marijuana in a drug-free zone charges, and on multiple misdemeanors. He remained in jail Wednesday in lieu of $4,555 bail.

The second suspect was a man in light-colored clothing, but no other description was available.
