An annual statewide campaign to encourage students to walk or bike to school kicked off early Wednesday with a pep rally at Arcadia Elementary School, 3461 W. 4850 South, Taylorsville.

The Utah Department of Transportation issued the "Walk More in Four" challenge, in which students in kindergarten through eighth grades will be urged to walk or bike to school at least three days each week during the four weeks of September. The school with the highest participation wins $500, and students who chart their progress are eligible for such prizes as bikes, scooters and helmets.

Walking and biking are good forms of exercise for students and reduces the need for car traffic at school, which improves safety for kids, officials said.
