Several Utah arts organizations will celebrate Beethoven in October. Other season highlights include visits from Broadway luminary Brian Stokes Mitchell, soprano Dawn Upshaw and the ever-popular King's Singers.

Orchestral music

Utah Symphony

The orchestra plays in Abravanel Hall, 123 W. South Temple, Salt Lake City. Most concerts begin at 8 p.m.

Oct. 25 • Family: Spooky Symphonies. Vladimir Kulenovic, conductor.

Oct. 28-29 • Entertainment: King's Singers. Jerry Steichen, conductor.

Nov. 3 • Special event: Vienna Boys Choir. (The Utah Symphony will not perform.)

Nov. 4-5 • Masterworks: Liszt, "Mephisto" Waltz No. 1; Walton, Violin Concerto; Beethoven, Symphony No. 7. Thierry Fischer, conductor; James Ehnes, violin.

Nov. 11-12 • Masterworks: Beethoven, Symphony No. 6 ("Pastoral"); Wagner, Prelude to Act I of "Lohengrin" and "Ride of the Valkyries"; Rouse, "Alberich Saved." Thierry Fischer, conductor; Colin Currie, percussion.

Nov. 18-19 • Masterworks: Berlioz, "The Childhood of Christ." Thierry Fischer, conductor; Utah Symphony Chorus and soloists Tamara Mumford, Chad Millar, Benedict Nelson, Keith Miller, Christopher Clayton and John Tessier.

Nov. 26-27 • Special event: "Messiah" Sing-In. Susanne Sheston, conductor; Utah Symphony Chorus and soloists TBA.

Dec. 2-3 • Masterworks: Ravel, "Mother Goose" Suite and "Daphnis and Chloë" Suite No. 2; Liszt, Piano Concerto No. 2 and "Totentanz." Gilbert Varga, conductor; Kirill Gerstein, piano.

Dec. 16-17 • Entertainment: Cirque de la Symphonie. Vladimir Kulenovic, conductor.

Dec. 17 • Lollipops: Here Comes Santa Claus. Vladimir Kulenovic, conductor.

Salt Lake Symphony

The community orchestra led by Robert Baldwin performs in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. Start time is 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 12 • Music from Disney films, featuring violinist Jenny Oaks Baker; music of Mendelssohn, Saint-Saëns and Debussy. With the University Women's Choir and selected high-school musicians.

Dec. 17 • Holiday concert with Red Rock Rondo performing Phillip Bimstein's song cycle "A Secret Gift"; also featuring the West Jordan High School Choir with conductor Kelly DeHaan.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Mack Wilberg leads the 360-member choir in 7:30 p.m. performances at the LDS Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City.

Dec. 15-17 • Christmas concerts with the Orchestra at Temple Square and guest artists TBA; mini-concert Dec. 18 at 10 a.m.

Utah Chamber Artists

The choir and orchestra led by Barlow Bradford perform in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. Start time is 7:30 p.m.

Salt Lake Vocal Artists

Brady Allred leads the organization's five choirs in performances at Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City. Each program will be offered at 2 and 7:30 p.m.

Dec. 3 • "Canticles and Carols: Music of the Angels," a festival of lessons and carols.

American Festival Chorus

Craig Jessop leads the Logan-based group. Performances are at 7:30 p.m., except as indicated.

Nov. 11 • Free Veterans Day program at Ellen Eccles Theatre, 43 S. Main, Logan, 11 a.m.

Nov. 11 and 13 • Britten's War Requiem, Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City.

Chamber music

NOVA Chamber Music Series

Resident artists, many of them members of the Utah Symphony, perform in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City.

Oct. 23 • Brahms, Sonata for Violin and Piano in D Minor; Wagner, "Siegfried" Idyll; Franck, Piano Quintet.

Nov. 13 • Beethoven, Sonata for Cello and Piano in A Major and "An die ferne Geliebte" featuring tenor Robert Breault; Andrew Norman, "Sync Up" for solo piano and "The Companion Guide to Rome" for string trio.

Salty Cricket Composers Collective

Performances in various Salt Lake City venues.

Oct. 26 • "A Plethora of Pierrot." Works for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano and optional voice — the ensemble used by Arnold Schoenberg in his watershed song cycle "Pierrot Lunaire" — with percussion added "for pizazz."

Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City

Concerts are in Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, Salt Lake City.

Oct. 31 • Talich Quartet: Mozart, Quartet in G Major, K. 387; Shulhoff, Quartet No. 1; Schubert, Quartet in A Minor, Op. 29 No. 1 ("Rosamunde")

Two renowned singers visit the Provo campus this fall.

Nov. 18-19 • Berlioz's 'The Childhood of Christ'

Thierry Fischer's Beethoven symphony cycle is the big news this season, but the Utah Symphony music director is also a big proponent of Hector Berlioz. Judging by his stellar performances of the Berlioz Requiem with the orchestra and Mormon Tabernacle Choir last month, Fischer's presentation of the composer's choral masterwork "The Childhood of Christ" promises to be another blockbuster.

Nov. 13 • NOVA Chamber Music Series

The Utah Symphony isn't the only organization celebrating Beethoven this season. NOVA, a long-running series spotlighting resident artists, gets in on the fun with a performance of the composer's song cycle "An die ferne Geliebte." Tenor Robert Breault, one of Utah's finest musicians in any genre, is the soloist.
