It was only the quarterfinals of the 4A girls' state soccer tournament, but Skyline and Bountiful played a second-round match on Thursday that had all the ups and downs of a championship contest.

Tied at 1-1 after regulation, the two teams battled to a second shootout, when Skyline goalie Alli Spencer slipped the game-winner past Bountiful's Carley Longhurst for the quarterfinal win.

The Skyline junior admitted afterward that her kick in the second shootout didn't exactly end up where she was aiming. "It was not even close to where I was trying to shoot it, but it went in," Spencer said with a smile.

"One man down, one goal down, they didn't quit," Skyline coach Yamil Castillo said of his team's comeback. "It's an amazing group of players."

Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the first half, as both squads played a tough, physical brand of defense, making scoring opportunities difficult to come by.

However, midway through the second half Bountiful scored on a penalty kick to grab a 1-0 lead. That advantage would hold up until the waning moments of the match, when Skyline's Ashley Aberton got loose for a game-tying goal. Her chip shot from the left angle was perfect.

"We never gave up," Aberton said. "I knew I had to get the ball [to the] far post with the goalie coming out."

Still, Bountiful coach Lou Plank believed the better team didn't win on Thursday.

"After watching the first 10 minutes, I thought we were the better team, [I] still think that. We didn't capitalize on those opportunities we had."
