South Jordan • Bingham sophomore Peyton Jones delivered perhaps the best performance of his career Wednesday in the second round of the Class 5A state baseball tournament.
The left-hander struck out a career-high 12 batter and limited visiting Roy to just four hits in a 2-0 victory.
"My curveball, I was throwing it for a strike today," said Jones, who struck out two batters in the third through seventh innings. "My fastball, I mixed it in there, too."
Jones' only jam came in the fifth inning of a scoreless game. Roy put runners on first and third with one out, but Bingham threw out a runner stealing at the plate, and Jones got a strikeout on a curveball to end the threat.
Roy's Brody Perkes matched Jones through four innings, but his defense let him down in the fifth. With a runner on first, Bingham outfielder Chad Wilson singled to right field. Wilson broke for second as the ball was cut off, and the throw sailed into left field to score Koby Tingley for the game's first run.
"I was expecting a first-pitch fastball, but I got a curveball instead," Wilson said.
A throwing error with two outs scored Wilson to give Jones more support than he would need. Jones gave up a leadoff single in the seventh, but catcher Copper Hansen picked off the runner during the next at-bat. Jones did the rest with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.
Jones faced two batters over the minimum and did not walk a batter.
"He's a stud, he's awesome," Wilson said. "It's fun being in the outfield when a pitcher is throwing strikes and it's not a long game at all."
Bingham (20-7), which beat Lehi in Monday's opening round, advanced to meet Lone Peak in Friday's winners bracket quarterfinal at Kearns High School.
Perkes struck out four for Roy (16-9), which falls to the elimination bracket and will play Pleasant Grove on Friday.
