The annual Elk Festival is Dec. 17 at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include: ornament making, creating a bird feeder out of a pinecone and, of course, observing and learning about elk. Visitors should bring binoculars, cameras and the appropriate clothing for being outside in the winter.

Elk are traditionally on the ranch by early December, but have been holding off this year. Wildlife officials are hoping they will move into the big meadow where the wagon/sleigh rides are offered. Tickets to take the ride are $5 for 9 and older and $3 for 4-8 year olds.

The ranch is 18 miles east of Hyrum on State Road 101. There is no food available at the ranch, but there is a lunch room.

Hardware ranch begins its wagon/sleigh ride operations on Dec. 16 and will be open Fridays and Mondays from noon to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased before 4:30 p.m.
