Overstock.com is preparing to auction off, one by one, more than 240 pallets stacked high with its returned merchandise.

The auction, which will be conducted by Erklens & Olson Auctioneers, begins at 10 a.m. Thursday in the company's warehouse at 1790 S. 4800 West in Salt Lake City.

"This will be a good opportunity for wholesalers, liquidators and individual purchasers to bid at auction on some quality merchandise," said auctioneer Rob Olson. "You'll see everything from furniture to outdoor equipment and small appliances."

Olson said each of the pallets will be marked with the merchandise they contain. A one-day preview is set on site from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

In the past, the online retailer has used a variety of methods to sell its return merchandise, including sales to liquidators and offering products through its outlet stores, said President Jonathan Johnson. "We've held auctions before, but this is the first time where the public will be invited to attend." —
