A TRAX train struck a pedestrian Thursday afternoon in South Salt Lake.

The accident happened just before 5 p.m. at 221 W. 2100 South, the Central Pointe station, authorities said.

As the train was leaving the station, it somehow hit the 40-year-old man, who had just gotten off the train, while he was standing on the platform, said Executive Officer Gary Keller of the South Salt Lake Police.

The blood trail at the scene appeared to show that the man was hit and knocked or dragged by the train a short distance along the platform until he ran into the glass-enclosed wheelchair access platform. About an hour after the accident, a baseball cap and a pool of blood remained on the platform near the raised wheelchair access.

The man suffered head and lower torso injuries, and was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, Keller said.

It doesn't appear the man went under the train, he said.

The train's driver didn't realize he hit the man, and continued southbound on his route on the Red Line, said Gerry Carpenter, Utah Transit Authority spokesman.

The driver was contacted and told what had happened. At another stop, the driver was taken off the train and put on leave, where he will remain as the incident is investigated. The train involved in the accident was taken off-line for the investigation, Carpenter said.

All trains operated on delay for about two hours after the incident, but they resumed a normal schedule at about 7 p.m.
