A Sudanese has been convicted of murder for supplying his friend with the handgun used to kill a fellow refugee on a highway in West Valley City last year.
A jury on Thursday convicted Idrees Adam Idrees, 22, on counts first-degree felony murder and second-degree felony possession of a firearm by a restricted person in connection with the January 2010 death of Mohammed Hassan.
Early on the morning of Jan. 22, the 20-year-old Hassan piled into a crowded Dodge Durango with Idrees and 21-year-old Akol Joker.
As the group drove along State Road 201, Joker became angry with Hassan and accused him of "snitching," according to testimony. Joker demanded Idrees give him the handgun he had been carrying that night. Idrees gave his friend the weapon.
Joker pulled Hassan by the shirt and fired a shot into his head, according to witnesses in the car.
Idrees faces up to life in prison when he is sentenced March 9 in 3rd District Court.
Joker pleaded guilty to a charge of murder earlier this month.
