Like "Les Miserables," "Oklahoma!" and the umpteenth community theater production of "The 39 Steps," there's no escaping "Cats."
Forget the fact that literati will feel compelled, once more, to point out that it's all based on T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. This, yet another Andrew Lloyd Webber creation, is the second longest-running show in Broadway history with more than 20 translations to speak for its worldwide presence. Webber's 1980 musical didn't do so badly on London's West End either, where it became the fourth longest-running show in that theater district. The touring production hitting Logan Tuesday and Wednesday is the ideal chance to introduce your children, or first date, to all the Jellicle Cats, from Victoria to Rum Tum Tugger to Bustopher Jones on up to Old Deuteronomy and down to Skimbleshanks.
This is the sort of musical that, if you don't walk away from just a little bit brighter in your smile afterward, marks you forever as the sort of person too dour for the musical stage anyway.
