Mentioned in my recap of BYU's Pro Day in this morning's paper that three of the 13 participants on Thursday didn't actually play for BYU. They were: 1) Andrew Hatch, a former LSU and Harvard quarterback who has ties to BYU because he is LDS and was recruited a bit by former BYU coach Gary Crowton. 2) Devin Tavana, an offensive lineman from Saipipi, Samoa and Southern Utah University who is the brother of BYU volleyball star Futi Tavana. 3) Les Brown, the brother of current BYU offensive lineman Braden Brown and tight end Trevor Brown. Les Brown has an interesting story, and as this Sports Illustrated report details, showed well at Pro Day although he's never played college football. Brown prepped at Park City, Judge Memorial and Highland High schools, where he played football and basketball, but chose to play basketball in college, at Westminster in SLC. Brown, 6-4 and 240, ran a 4.4 40 in front of scouts yesterday, and had a few of them asking for more information. His brother, Braden, was walking around the indoor practice facility with a huge smile on his face and telling all his teammates who were watching, "I told you he's a beast." According to the agency that will represent him, Les Brown went to Hawaii to work out with Chad Ikei, a well-known NFL Combine trainer, and he was reportedly putting up numbers similar to some of the top NFL draft prospects who were there. He also performed well at the NFL Regional in Cleveland a few weeks ago. Here's a link to a story about a former BYU lineman, Nate Hartung, who is trying to make a college comeback in Winston-Salem, N.C., after working at a steel mill the past few years. ——————————————- Apologies to BYU senior Jordan Pendleton, who did indeed bench press 225 lbs. 30 times on Thursday. I tweeted out that it was 28, by my count, and noted that it was "almost 30" in the newspaper, but have been informed by several folks that it was actually 30 on the nose. Props to Pendleton, one of the strongest Cougars — pound for pound — in history. Couple other notes from Pro Day: * Matt Reynolds is being represented by Carter Chow, son of former BYU and Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow (now Hawaii's head coach). Like Reynolds, Carter Chow is a Timpview High product. * Reynolds said Thursday that everywhere he goes since the Cougars played in the Armed Forces Bowl last December, people bring up his helmetless block that bought quarterback Riley Nelson some extra time and helped him find Cody Hoffman for a touchdown. "Lots of scouts brought it up at the NFL Combine," he said. * Reynolds is projected to be drafted between the second and fourth rounds by most NFL mock draft boards, and the general consensus from Thursday was that he helped his stock after not doing well at the combine last month. He showed more speed in the 40 and more quickness in the three-cone drill and shuttle drill. "I have heard all across the board," he said. "It is hard to know right now. So many things can change between now and the draft. So many things can change on draft day as well, so anybody's guess is as good as mine right now." * Reynolds said that his strengths are his consistency and durability, and believes that returning to BYU for his senior season paid off in the long run because he was able to improve in a couple key areas. "I have got 52 games for them to watch, four straight years of game film for them to watch against different teams, different situations, injured, healthy, right side, left side, they have got a lot to look at, so I would say that is probably the biggest strength I have right now."————————————- I counted 17 representatives of NFL teams at BYU's Pro Day, although only 15 were wearing apparel that identified them with a particular team. Here are those teams: San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Denver Broncos, Jacksonville Jaguars. I'm guessing that the other two were the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders, but couldn't verify and didn't get the chance to ask for sure.
