The Utah Utes are spending money to make money, and Utah State is getting a sought-after home-and-home series with Boise State as the two Utah schools rearrange their 2014 football schedules.
The Utes, who wanted another home game in 2014, have bought their way out of their road trip to Logan for $500,000.
Opening the schedule will allow Utah to host another home game, with the opponent yet to be determined.
Utah State, meanwhile, will play the Broncos on Sept. 14, 2014, at Romney Stadium and will play in Boise on Sept. 26, 2015.
"This is a great opportunity for our program to have a home-and-home series with a quality opponent in Boise State," Utah State coach Gary Andersen said.
Utah State is 4-13 all-time against the Broncos. The teams played annually from 1996 to 2000 as Big West Conference foes and then as WAC foes from 2005 to 2010.
Boise State is joining the Big East as a football-only member in July 2013.
As for the Utes, they will host Utah State in 2013 and 2015 and play in Logan on Sept. 7, 2012. The Utes made $1.46 million per game on ticket sales alone in 2011, making the buyout still a profitable decision, Utah athletic director Chris Hill said.
