Duluth, Ga. • Since she competed almost exclusively on the vault this year, Utah freshman Kailah Delaney learned to make her one shot of competing count as she consistently posted 9.9s throughout the season.
But when it came to hitting two big vaults back to back, Delaney couldn't pull off that same level of success.
Delaney, who had 10 vaults of 9.9 or higher this year, finished ninth out of 10 competitors in the vault individual championships here at the NCAA meet in the Gwinnett Center.
Delaney had a combined vault total of 9.7. The only competitor who had a lower average was her teammate, fellow freshman Georgia Dabritz, who had an 8.7938.
Delaney had a 9.875 on her first vault and a 9.75 on her second.
Delaney, from Yorba Linda, Calif., entered the championships as the nation's 15th-ranked vaulter with a regional qualifying score of 9.91 and was the NCAA regional vault runner-up.
Delaney scored a 9.95 on the event in the NCAA preliminaries and posted a 9.85 on the event in the Super Six.
Both she and Dabritz haven't practiced a second vault, which is required for the individual championships.
"We knew it was going to be hard if I made finals," Delaney said. "Right now just being here and being a part of this has been a great experience."
Utah coach Greg Marsden said the Utes would work with Delaney so she would have a second vault in the future.
"If they don't have one when they come in as freshmen, it's hard to get that in in the first season," Marsden said.
Dabritz planned to do two different vaults but performed the same one twice when she realized midway through her second attempt she didn't have enough propulsion to land the vault she had planned.
"I thought it was better to be safe and land on my feet," she said.
She was penalized a point for competing the same vault. She scored a 9.8 on the first and a 9.7875 on the second before the deduction was taken.
Florida's Kytra Hunter won the vault title with a 9.875.
Georgia's Kat Ding defended her title on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.9875 and won the floor with a 9.95. Alabama's Geralen Stack-Eaton won the balance beam title with a 9.9375.
