MOVIES

"The Avengers" is the real deal, a rousing superhero action movie that's brimming with good humor and sharp wit. Director/screenwriter Joss Whedon makes the story accessible to newcomers while keeping the fanboys happy. The performances - especially Robert Downey Jr. as the sarcastic Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as the stalwart Capt. Steve Rogers/Captain America and Mark Ruffalo as the brooding Dr. Bruce Banner (who becomes The Hulk) - are outstanding. The bar for the summer has been set, and set high.

The only other studio movie this week is "LOL," a teen romance starring Miley Cyrus. It was not screened for critics.

The art-house list is strong, with good movies all around.

"Damsels in Distress" is writer-director Whit Stillman's return to form, a cleverly chatty comedy about privileged people - specifically, a group of young women seeking to civilize their until-recently all-male college. The leader of the group, Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), is quite outspoken in her belief in the healing power of tap-dancing and Gershwin music, until her personal life goes into a "tailspin" when her dimbulb boyfriend leaves her. Gerwig ("Greenberg," "Arthur") is charmingly goofy and appealing, as is the movie.

Two documentaries explore the work of artists in quite different fields. "Marley" is an exhaustive biography of the reggae legend Bob Marley, focusing on his life, religion and music. "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" is a gorgeously minimalist look at one of the world's greatest sushi chefs, whose philosophy of life and work comes through in every bite.

The Turkish drama "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" starts out like a police procedural, as law officers search the Turkish steppes looking for the body of a murder victim. But director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's slow, deliberate pace reveals something else, as each person on the search - the police commisar, the prosecutor, the suspect and the coroner - each see the search for a body as a quest for a deeper truth. The movie's overlong, but interesting.

The Wombats • This pop-rock trio hail from Liverpool, the hometown of some other British band. The three musicians who became The Wombats met while students at the prestigious Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, co-founded by some bloke named Paul McCartney in the 1990s. Despite its rigorous curriculum, "no one can teach you how to tour for two years," said drummer Dan Haggis in a Tribune interview. Although the band has played arenas in its home country, Haggis admitted that the band "works better in smaller venues" such as Kilby Court. "That's where we came from, playing to 200 people in a club." Because this will be the band's first trip to Utah, a local friend has promised to take them fly-fishing on the day of the show. That's also a first, Haggis said. "You can't live your life worrying about breaking something," he said. Static Jacks and Flagship open.

A University of Utah grad, Rinker in his early days performed some gigs with fellow University of Utah grad Kaskade, who has jetted to the top of the dance world. It was a trip to Ibiza that changed Rinker's life. "I went one year," Rinker said. "I was a D.J. before I went, but [the visit] cemented it for me." "I Love Ibiza" is a great asset to the city, Rinker said, bringing dance music usually only heard in Miami and Ibiza available in Utah.

TV

To sum up Season 20 of The Amazing Race — loved the places the contestants raced to; hated the contestants.

Well, not all the contestants. But the four teams who are still in the race heading into Sundays (7 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2) season finale have all been beyond annoying. They fight, they argue, they belittle each other, they're arrogant. And those are some of their better qualities.

So it's hard to figure who to root for — Dave and Rachel (Army officer and his wife); Rachel and Brendon (former "Big Brother" contestants); Ralph and Vanessa (dating divorcees); or Art and J.J. (Border Patrol agents). They've all acted badly more than once one the race.

However … there is a reason to watch the two-hour finale. We were teased last week with a clip in which host Phil Keoghan tells the team that arrives at the finish line first they have to go back because they failed to complete a task.

Can't wait to see who that turns out to be.

Elsewhere on Friday ...

Undercover Boss (7 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2): The CEO of Fastsigns International goes under cover.

Blue Bloods (9 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2): Jackie and Danny investigate a suspicious death.

Magic City (11 p.m., Starz): Pictures of Stevie and Lily surface.

In Plain Sight (11 p.m., USA): An unexpected family reunion complicates Mary's latest case.

Elsewhere on Saturday …

Kentucky Derby (2 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5): The scheduled post-time is 4:24 p.m. MDT. The race will last, oh, about 2 minutes. The rest of the three-hour telecast is filler.

Treasure Island (5 and 7 p.m., Syfy): Eddie Izzard and Elijah Wood star in this new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale.

Escape Routes (7 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5): Winners are declared in the finale.
