West Jordan • When Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay Osmond started performing as a barbershop quartet 54 years ago, who would have predicted that these boys from Ogden would eventually earn international renown?

Probably no one except their proud parents, George and Olive. The Osmonds' popularity kicked into hyper-drive in the '70s with the "Donny and Marie" television show and has shown unparalleled stamina.

Saturday night, Osmond brothers Merrill, Jay and Jimmy returned to the stage at a bulging West Jordan Arena in a concert benefiting the Olive Osmond Hearing Fund, a nonprofit honoring their late mother and promoting hearing educational services.

One of the concert's touching moments came when the two oldest Osmond brothers, Virl and Tom, who were born with hearing loss, came onstage with Virl's hearing-impaired son, Justin, to present hearing aids for two children, a young girl and a 10-month-old boy.

The Osmonds 2nd Generation warmed up the audience with the family's trademark high-energy showmanship and charisma. The five boys, Nathan, Doug, David, Alex and Scott, all sons of Alan, who no longer performs, brought their father onstage for a Father's Day tribute, singing "Ding Dong Daddy" in barbershop harmony. Alan joined them singing in a solo moment.

David soloed during the nostalgic "Stayin' Together," and the group honored veterans with "Put Your Hand Over Your Heart," by Orrin Hatch and Janice Kapp Perry. After an upbeat rendition of "Hang on Sloopy," the boys introduced their wives and a total of 11 children.

During intermission, presided over by KUTV anchor Mark Kobell, the boys sang Nathan Osmond's "Music to Your Ears," the Olive Osmond Foundation's theme song.

Singing "Down by the Lazy River," Merrill, Jay and Jimmy showed why they are the longest continuing pop ensemble in the business. Their impeccable harmony and still-strong voices charged through an hour-plus set that included "We are Family," "The Proud One," "Yo, Yo" and their father's favorite, "Impossible Dream," with Merrill as soloist.

Their country hit, "Heartache Tonight," and touching "Remember Me" were followed by encores of memorable hits like "Love Me for a Reason" and "Crazy Horses." More nostalgia followed with home movies of their younger years singing on "The Andy Williams Show" and ended with a tribute to brother singing groups like the Bee Gees, Everly Brothers and the Jackson 5.

The show was a self-proclaimed reunion. As one of the performers mentioned, just look for someone with big teeth — they're probably family. —
