United Way of Salt Lake has kicked off the Summer of Service program to encourage youths around Utah to volunteer throughout the summer.
Kids ages 5 to 18 from Davis, Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties can participate through Aug. 31, taking advantage of various opportunities to earn bronze-, silver- or gold-level service hours and recognition. Kids who log five, 10 or 25 hours also will be recognized at a lunch event at The Gateway on Sept. 8.
Jerilyn Stowe, spokeswoman for United Way of Salt Lake, on Tuesday said the summer provides plenty of time for kids to make a difference around Utah.
"There is so much service that needs to be done and kids have the time to do it," Stowe said.
Potential volunteers can sign up and find volunteer opportunities at http://www.211ut.org.
Stowe said the program gives kids a chance to make their community better.
"It's a great way to connect kids to their community and help them see that there is something bigger out there," Stowe said.
