Joseph Fire Crow, Grammy-winning Northern Cheyenne flutist will visit Utah twice over Labor Day weekendone at Sundance's Redford Center on Friday morning, August 31, at 9 a.m., and the other at Utah Valley University on the next night (Saturday, Sept. 1 at 7:30) at the Center Stage in a Sound Healing Concert benefit for the new Sacred Hoop Healing Center of Provo.
Fire Crow attended BYU for three years when he rediscovered the flute and decided to return to the Northern Cheyenne reservation to study traditional Native flutemaking and performance.
Ken Burns has used Fire Crow by utilizing his music for the documentaries "Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery" and "The National Parks: America's Best Ideas."
He will be assisting Don Coyhis, Mohican elder and head of the Wellbriety Movement, who will be performing a Sacred Hoop ceremony at Sundance. This ceremony is open to the public and is free.
On Saturday night, Joe Fire Crow will perform a Sound Healing Concert at UVU, in which he will play his hand-made flutes and chant in Cheyenne. Accompanying him will be a troupe of Navajo hoop dancers.
This is a benefit for the newly opened Sacred Hoop Healing Center, a support center for Native Americans in Provo. Suggested donation is $15.
