If you crossed "Grey's Anatomy" with "Ally McBeal," you just might end up with Emily Owens, M.D. (Tuesday, 8 p.m., CW/Ch. 30).

It's not a great show, but it's a much better show than you might expect for one reason - Mamie Gummer is so winning in the title role.

Emily is a former high-school geek who's now a talented, newly minted doctor beginning an internship at a Denver hospital. And she's still an insecure mess. She has a crush on a fellow doctor (Justin Hartley) and is tormented by an intern (Aja Naomi King) who bullied her in high school.

In this show, a major metropolitan hospital IS high school, with cliques and mean girls and jocks and disrespected authority figures.

If you're old enough to remember all the voiceovers in "Ally McBeal" as that character narrated that show, all the voiceovers in "Emily Owens, M.D."

There are more than a few over-the-top moments, particularly when Emily crushes on her fellow doctor. But Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter) is so charming she manages to make the character likable despite the writing.

That's a rare gift.
