BYU's already-sizeable 2013 football recruiting class continues to change. Francis Bernard, a 6-foot-, 215-pound running back and safety from Herriman High, in the southwest portion of the Salt Lake Valley, told me today that he has committed to play football for BYU. Bernard said he committed to coach Bronco Mendenhall by telephone last Friday. "I committed just because it felt right," he said. Bernard turns 18 in April and said he will go on an LDS Church mission this summer after he graduates from Herriman. He plans to begin playing for the Cougars in 2015. He said he could have opted to play right away, and would have received a scholarship if he chose that route, but decided to take advantage of the new minimum age of 18 for missionaries and get out in the mission field right away. News of Bernard's commitment comes a day after the Cougars learned that Bingham High receiver Hayden Weichers, who pledged last summer, has decommitted and now plans to sign with Utah State. Coincidentally, Bernard said his only other offer came from Utah State. He drew some interest from the school that has been his favorite growing up, Utah, but no offer. "I've never really been a big BYU fan, although I've been a fan of some of their running backs over the years," Bernard said. "This is just how it worked out and where I felt I needed to go."Bernard has started all three years of Herriman's existence. He rushed for 822 yards (8.2 ypc.) and 15 touchdowns in nine games this past season, while catching six passes for 107 yards and a TD. As a safety, he recorded 24 tackles and four interceptions (two of which he returned for touchdowns). He also returned a punt for a touchdown. In his career, Bernard rushed for 3,123 yards and 45 touchdowns, caught 39 passes for 504 yards and three TDs. He had a total of 52 touchdowns in his career. He also plays basketball and rugby for the Mustangs.
