NFL • The New York Giants continued their roster purge, cutting leading rusher Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty.

The salary cap-saving moves on Wednesday came one day after New York let starting weakside linebacker Michael Boley go after four seasons.

Bradshaw, Canty and Boley contributed to the Giants' Super Bowl win a year ago, but had big contracts and battled injuries.

• Donald Driver officially retired Wednesday after 14 seasons — all with the Packers, which was extremely important to him.

The franchise's all-time leading receiver celebrated his career during an unprecedented event inside the Lambeau Field atrium with 1,500 fans, his family, Packers coaches, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Green Bay mayor Jim Schmitt and a handful of teammates.

Groups want more student safety

A coalition of more than 100 groups is recommending that student athletes have access to health care professionals, better-trained coaches and up-to-date equipment.

The recommendations released Wednesday are included in a call to action designed to protect the nearly 8 million students who participate in high school sports each year.

The Youth Sports Safety Alliance says health professionals should be available at every school. The group is telling schools to warn students about performance-enhancing substances. It recommends creating a national registry to track student athlete deaths.
