Search and rescue crews were working Sunday afternoon to rescue a skier who got caught in an avalanche in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Unified police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the avalanche occurred about 2:30 p.m. in the Broad's Fork Canyon area, which is about 4 miles inside Big Cottonwood Canyon.

He said as of 3:30 p.m., a medical helicopter was working to remove the man, who is believed to have suffered a broken leg in the slide.

Authorities weren't immediately sure what caused the avalanche.
