A Wyoming man is facing charges for allegedly molesting a child almost 30 years ago.
The Utah Attorney General's Office on Monday charged the 62-year-old man with three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison for each count.
The Laramie County Sheriff's Department arrested the man Wednesday morning and booked him into a Cheyenne jail, where he awaits an extradition hearing.
An alleged victim recently told police that the suspect molested her in the 1980s while they both lived in Clinton. She told investigators the abuse occurred hundreds of times from when she was 3 or 4 years old until he moved away when she was 10, according to charging documents.
Even though that was decades ago, prosecutors were able to file charges because the statute of limitations does not run when a suspect is in another state, said Children's Justice Division Chief Craig Barlow.
The man moved from Utah in 1985 and only returned to the state a few times, for a total of about two weeks in the past 28 years, Barlow said.
