Last week, the Legislature sent to the governor a bill that would allow people to carry a concealed firearm without a permit. The story "Senate OKs concealed-gun bill, sets showdown with Utah guv" (Tribune, March 14) reported that the bill's sponsor, Rep. John Mathis, R-Vernal, "said the bill is simply a matter of convenience for ranchers in rural areas who might find themselves in violation of the law by accidentally covering a gun while putting on a raincoat."

This might be humorous if it were not so tragic. Does one have to be an idiot to be elected to office?

We're talking about people's lives here, fella!

Gov. Gary Herbert, let sanity prevail, and veto this idiocy. It's time to put a rein on this Utah cowboy mentality.
