My wife and I were catching up on "Mad Men" on Monday night when my phone rang.
It was Guy Timpson, who is still a follower of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. And that's what he wanted to discuss.
A blog post last week implied Timpson is no longer in the FLDS. He said that is incorrect. Timpson still considers himself one of the FLDS. It's Warren Jeffs who Timpson no longer follows.
Like at least a few hundred people in Colorado City, Ariz., Hildale, Utah, and a few other places, they have come to the conclusion Jeffs is no longer their prophet. That is because Jeffs said as much in 2007 and/or because of the crimes Jeffs committed and/or the bizarre edicts he ordered over the years. As far as Timpson and those like him are concerned, Jeffs left them; not the other way around.
In "Mad Men" Don Draper and the other advertising professionals sell products by conveying short ideas often with a basis in emotion. There's plenty of emotion among the FLDS and those who no longer follow Jeffs. Quickly and accurately conveying the complicated relationship structure is the hard part.
