Orem police arrested two Brigham Young University football players after the men allegedly broke into two apartments Saturday morning.
The players, who were subsequently suspended from the team, were trying to locate people that hit one of the players' girlfriends with a water balloon, police said.
Terrance Deshawn Hooks, 19, and Vitale TaAaga Magauli So'oto, 19, were booked into the Utah County jail on suspicion of burglary after kicking in two doors at the Parkway Crossing Apartment complex.
Hooks' girlfriend, Natalie Dew, 19, was also arrested, Lt. Doug Edwards said.
Two 22-year-olds apparently were throwing water balloons from a third-floor bedroom window Friday night after a parking lot dance in the area. Dew was hit in the leg, and she exchanged insults with the pair and said she would return "with some guys," Edwards said.
When Dew returned later with Hooks and So'oto, they also exchanged words with the balloon throwers, Edwards said.
Hooks and So'oto went upstairs to confront the pair but got lost in the building, Edwards said. Hooks allegedly kicked down the door of an apartment not occupied by the balloon throwers. When he realized his mistake, Hooks and So'oto left.
Police and apartment security officers were called as the the football players allegedly checked another apartment window and then found a third apartment where they believed the balloon throwers were hiding. They kicked down that door too, Edwards said.
Officers found the football players and Dew in the apartment before they could find the water balloon throwers hiding in a closet.
The football players and Dew were arrested on suspicion of burglary because they entered the apartment with the intent to assault the balloon throwers, Edwards said.
The balloon throwers were cited for misdemeanor criminal mischief for their role in the mayhem.
BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Sunday that Hooks and So'oto were suspended for violating team rules.
Both players are banned from participating in spring practice this week, including Saturday's annual Blue-White game.
They are the second and third players Mendenhall has suspended during the offseason. Defensive lineman Matangi Tonga was dismissed before spring practice.
All three players were in the two-deep depth chart at their respective positions.
"This is a matter we take very seriously. As a result, both players have been suspended from the football team as of Sunday evening," BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall said.
"The nature, length and severity of the suspension will not only be based upon what is eventually determined from a legal standpoint, but also, we will handle this as an internal matter relative to the expectation of conduct that is required of members of this football program," he said.
