Two men sitting inside a parked SUV were sprayed with shattered glass but otherwise unhurt when gunfire erupted from a passing car near Salt Lake City's Rose Park Golf Course.

Salt Lake City police Det. Mike Hamideh said the incident occurred about 5 p.m. Tuesday near 1800 W. Independence Avenue (1400 North).

Witnesses reported that as a white passenger car drove by the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was parked in front of a house, multiple gunshots were fired and the car sped off. The two men inside the Jeep appeared unwounded, and fled on foot after gathering items from inside their vehicle.

"This was an egregious act. This was right about the time people were coming home from work and kids were in the area," Hamideh said.

All the suspects, variously described as white or Latino, in their early 20s and with shaved heads, were gone when police arrived.

The Jeep was impounded and detectives are investigating whether it may have been stolen.
