What's on your Utah Bucket List?"

It's a phrase I've uttered and written a lot over the past 13 months while working on "The Utah Bucket List" project.

Stories highlighting 10 of the 12 items on our Utah bucket list already have run in The Tribune, and the one-hour film produced by KUED-Ch. 7, with me as the host, premieres at 7 p.m. Aug. 1. Other showings will be at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 8 and 4 p.m. Aug. 11.

The idea of "The Utah Bucket List" is to inspire people to discover, and even rediscover, the outdoor wonders of our state.

Of the 12 items on the list, I had done all but three. Two of those things (mountain biking the White Rim Trail and canyoneering) I had on my personal list of things to do before I no longer am able. I also had wanted to ride the bobsled at Utah Olympic Park (both winter and summer) but had not given much thought to the freestyle ski jumping into the splash pool.

That turned out to be one of my favorites. Also the only one I limped away from doing.

I've heard from a lot of people who said reading the stories has motived them to make plans for doing something they long have dreamed of doing but never got around to doing.

One thing both intriguing and irritating that I came upon again and again while doing the bucket list show was people from other states, even other countries, telling me they had to come to Utah for these amazing experiences.

I kept wondering why residents of the state weren't enjoying the same things. It happened even during something as unique as the bison roundup on Antelope Island.

Sure, there were plenty of people from Utah doing some of the items, but I'll wager that most of them had crossed two, maybe three, items off the list we came up with.

Our dozen selections were not a list of commandments or a top 10 type of thing. We picked them simply to serve as a starting point for coming up with your own list.

So include a couple of our items, then add your own. More importantly, start crossing them off.

What's on my Utah bucket list?

Float the Green and Colorado rivers from Flaming Gorge Dam to Lake Powell.

I was close once, and it just made me want it more. I just need to find the permits, money and 34 days to do it.
