Midway • BYU golfer Lea Garner rallied to tie San Diego State incoming freshman Sirene Blair for medalist honors Tuesday in the stroke-play portion of the State Women's Amateur at Wasatch Mountain State Park.
Garner (71-71) birdied Nos. 13 and 14 on the Lake Course and Blair (70-72) bogeyed No. 17, as they finished at 2-under-par 142 for 36 holes. Garner, a Bonneville High School product, and Blair, of Bingham, will enter the 16-golfer match-play bracket Wednesday as co-favorites, along with defending champion Kelsey Chugg, the designated No. 1 seed. The semifinals and finals are scheduled Thursday.
The cut to match play came at 151, with no playoff required. Tara Green and Rynae Baca joined Chugg at 145, tying for third place. Then came Randi Stephens and Annette Gaiotti at 147; Haley Dunn and Kristie Jensen at 149; 2011 champion Julie McMullin, Brooke Whittaker and Madi Rooker at 150; and Kalea Heu, Carly Oldroyd, Hannah Herman and Sadie Palmer at 151.
