The Community Foundation of Utah has awarded $25,000 in grants to 12 organizations whose programs support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

The grants, which were in amounts up to $4,000, went to a variety of groups, from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah for a new mentoring program to well-known LGBT organizations such as the Utah Pride Center and Ogden OUTreach Resource Center.

The grants come from the The LGBT Community Endowment Fund.

Fraser Nelson, Community Foundation of Utah executive director, said the foundation responded to people who came to them with philanthropic ideas.

She said the point of the LGBT endowment fund is to "leverage the gifts from lots of different people to have a greater impact." For example, someone could donate $100 or $1,000 to the endowment, which could then go to groups the donor would not have thought about supporting.

"(These grants) cut across all segments of our community," Nelson said.

The organizations receiving grants include the following:

Transgender Education Advocates of Utah, to provide a training video for employees of the Utah Department of Motor Vehicles/Drivers License Division on policies surrounding the treatment of gender non-conforming clients.

• A partnership between Moab Pride and the Moab Teen Center, to establish a Gay Straight Alliance and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) chapter in Moab.

Plan-B Theatre Company, to support the elementary school tour of "DIFFERENT=AMAZING," a play that increases understanding of the impact of bullying.

• The University of Utah's Honors College, for the 2013 Think Tank on Queer Activism and Social Justice.

Utah Health & Human Rights to support the integration and needs of LGBT political asylum seekers.
