The Snow College Badgers kicked off their season Saturday with something to show from last year's 11-1 season — the No. 2 ranking in the NJCAA preseason poll.

The Badgers return five starters on offense and four on defense, but coach Britt Maughan is brand new. He takes over for Tyler Hughes, who resigned in the offseason despite the team's top-three ranking in the final 2012 poll.

Snow's schedule this year features four ranked teams, including three Western States Football League opponents: No. 11 Western Arizona, No. 20 Glendale and No. 25 New Mexico Military. Nonconference foe Georgia Military is ranked 22.

The Badgers return a pair of good running backs in Kalami Molosi and Jeffie Johnson, who combined for 817 yards and eight touchdowns while backing up the nation's leading rusher Breon Allen.

Crosby Jensen and Ryan Rosenvall are battling for the starting quarterback role.

Jensen is a 2010 Cottonwood High graduate who is returning from an LDS mission. Rosenvall has taken an even more twisting journey to Snow. The 2007 Alta High graduate played a successful season at West L.A. Community College, redshirted a season at Middle Tennessee State and served an LDS mission before finally ending up in Ephraim.

The 2013 season also brings changes to the schedule. The WSFL will stage a playoff for the first time ever. Snow will play just one nonconference game and eight regular-season conference games. Depending on how well they do in conference it could mean extra home games in the quarterfinals, semifinals or championship round of the WSFL playoffs. —
