A Brigham City mother returned home to find her teenage daughter had been shot to death, apparently in a murder-suicide committed by the girl's stepfather.

The woman arrived about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at her home, 545 N. 100 East, to find the body of 16-year-old Alix Norman in a pool of blood near the stairs from the basement, where the family had been living during a remodel of the house, said Brigham City police Lt. Mike Nelsen.

Officers arrived to find the woman's husband, 45-year-old Michael Woodruff, killed by what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a different room of the house, Nelsen said. A handgun was close to Woodruff's body, Nelsen said.

The family dog also was found shot to death in yet another room of the house, Nelsen said.

Investigators were still at the scene late Tuesday night, and the victims' bodies had not yet been taken to a medical examiner, Nelsen said.

Detectives were in the process of interviewing neighbors and other people connected to the family to determine what the motive may have been. Norman reportedly attended all of her classes at school on Tuesday, Nelsen said.
