Packaging with a twist has earned the Sweet Candy Co. accolades in two recent industry competitions.

The Utah company's new Taffy Twist Box - which twists open like a candy wrapper - was nominated in the "Upscale Gourmet" category for Professional Candy Buyer's Product of the Year competition.

The Utah design also was recognized by the Communication Arts Annual Design Competition for creative packaging.

The product was entirely a Utah-based effort, with Struck Design helping with creation and Utah Paper Box doing the fabrication.

Inside the colorful boxes are several new gourmet flavors, including caramel, watermelon, eggnog and candy cane, as well as specialty mixes such as "Coffee Shop," with espresso, mocha latte and cappuccino taffy; "State Fair," with bubble gum, cotton candy, buttered popcorn and red licorice flavors; and "Malt Shop" offering cherry cola, banana split, chocolate shake and root beer float-flavored taffy.

Decadent evening: Enjoy an evening of chocolate Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Kimball Distributing, 2233 S. 300 East. Instructor Diane Sheya, owner of Ivy House Herbs, will walk students through the history of this beloved bean as well introduce them to various chocolates, pairing ideas and some decadent desserts. Anti-hunger effort: Salt Lake City's Metropolitan Restaurant will hold "A Tasteful Pursuit - Chefs on Tour for Hunger" April 28th at 6 p.m. The silent auction and dinner will benefit "Share Our Strength," a national anti-hunger organization.

Metropolitan's culinary team of Jed Banta, Chris Durfee, Chad Horton and Justin Shifflett will create a multi-course meal with the help of Chef Robert Barker of Salt Lake's Bambara and touring chefs Michelle Bernstein of Michy's in South Beach and Matt Gennuso of Chez Pascal in Providence. Jill Cordes of HGTV and the Food Network will be the emcee.

Ben to Rachael: Tins from Ben's Cookies, a bakery in The Gateway, were flown to New York City recently, serving as "snack of the day" on a recent episode of the Rachael Ray talk show.

Each member of the studio audience received a tin of Ben's Cookies, which has 11 stores in the United Kingdom.

The Utah store is the only franchise in the United States. It is owned and operated by Joel Clark, who discovered the cookies while working on a master's degree at Oxford University.

"We made it a tradition to treat ourselves to a Ben's after we took our exams." he said. Still dressed in their academic gowns, which are required when taking exams at Oxford, students would form long lines to get a milk chocolate chunk or other favorite cookie hot from the oven.

Ben's Cookies are made with all natural ingredients and imported Belgian chocolate.
