The U.S. Navy program for youths in the Beehive State will change its name to honor the USS Utah, which was capsized during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC ) program in Utah will be recommissioned as the NSCC Battleship Utah (BB-31) in a ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday in the state Capitol Rotunda. The NSCC contingent in Utah has been called the Great Salt Lake Division.
Saturday's program will also commemorate the anniversary of the attack and include five survivors from the USS Utah, said Chief Wayne Baker, of the NSCC.
The USS Utah was the first ship to be torpedoed during the attack. The ship capsized and killed 58 sailors.
The NSCC is a program for youths ages 13 to 17. Baker said Battleship Utah contingent has 52 cadets enrolled.
