Gov. Gary Herbert appointed a new communication director Thursday.

Marty Carpenter, formerly of the Salt Lake Chamber, will replace Ally Isom as the governor's mouthpiece and spokesperson. Isom left the governor's office last month.

Carpenter previously served as the executive vice president of communication for the Salt Lake Chamber. Before that, he took a leave of absence from the business organization to work on Herbert's campaign. He also worked as the chamber's director of communication.

Herbert called Carpenter a perfect fit for the position.

"Marty benefits from a deep understanding of our goals as an administration and state, a strong relationship with the media, and he has proven to be a valuable member of our team before," Herbert said in a statement.

Carpenter expressed excitement about working in the governor's office. He previously worked as a TV newsperson in Oklahoma and Kansas. He graduated from Weber State University and lives in Syracuse with his wife and four children.
