Orem • Lone Peak standout T.J. Haws may not have enjoyed a typical shooting game at the Great Western Shootout on Friday night. In fact, it could reasonably be said that Haws was even pressing through most of the second half.

But Haws raced down the right side of the Orem High court in the closing seconds against Bishop O'Connell and launched a running 35-footer as time ran out.

And whatever struggles he had earlier were instantly corrected as the ball swished through for a Lone Peak 49-46 victory.

Haws finished with 18 points to lead his group of Knights, who had trailed the Bishop O'Connell Knights from Arlington, Va., for most of the contest.

"We had lots of guys step up. Frank [Jackson] hit a couple of big shots; Spence [Spencer Curtis] had great boards at the end and throughout the game actually," Haws said. "Framp [Zach Frampton] hit a shot. It was a good team win for us."

Bishop O'Connell (1-2), paced by Keljin Blevins' 16 points, led by as many as nine early in the second quarter. The Virginia team was still ahead 33-32 early in the fourth quarter when Lone Peak's Jackson popped his second 3-pointer within a minute.

Following Jackson's trey, Frampton canned a 3 of his own and Lone Peak was up by five.

"We came out with a chip on our shoulders," said Jackson, a sophomore who ended with 14 points. "We were upset we lost yesterday, but we put that behind us."

A big 3-pointer from Romelo Trimble, a University of Maryland recruit, drew O'Connell to within two points with 1:54 remaining.

But Haws, who had ended his second half drought with a floating layup a minute earlier, put Lone Peak ahead 46-42 with a jumper with 1:20 left. Then it was Jamaal King and Trimble who connected on two free throws each to tie the game — Trimble's coming with only four seconds left.

That all set up Haws big shot at the buzzer that triggered a rush of Lone Peak celebrants toward the BYU-bound senior.

"He was oh-for-eight [from 3-point range] until that last one. He's a great player who was having a tough night," Lone Peak coach Quincy Lewis said. "But he hung in there and he makes the play of the game." —
