A cyclist was critically injured when he collided with a school bus Friday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

The bicycle and the bus were traveling west on 300 South near 239 East when they collided, said Salt Lake City police spokesman Dennis McGowan.

The cyclist, a 55-year-old man, suffered critical injuries, but his condition was upgraded to serious after medics stabilized him, McGowan said.

Investigators are trying to learn why the bike and bus hit each other.

Three children were on the bus at the time of the crash, McGowan said.
