Today's 2014 Sundance Film Festival trailer takes viewers to Tanzania, to meet a boy who's life is in danger because of the color of his skin.
"White Shadow" tells the story of a boy named Alias (Hamisi Bazili), who is an albino — which is a dangerous thing to be in East Africa, where people believe an albino's body parts can convey magic powers, leading to albinos getting killed and dismembered.
Alias is sent away from his village by his mother, to find refuge in the city after he sees his father's murder. But the city presents its own dangers, and Alias learns he must use the same rules of survival.
"White Shadow," an Italy/Germany/Tanzania co-production directed by Noaz Deshe (who co-wrote with James Masson), plays in the World Cinema Dramatic competition of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Its first screening is Friday, Jan. 17, at 2:45 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre in Park City.
