Murray • Republican party members on Thursday selected Aimee Winder Newton to fill a Salt Lake County Council seat and Robert Spendlove to represent District 49 in the Utah House of Representatives.

The terms will last until January 2015, when the winners in the November general election will assume the offices. Ratification of the selections will be done by the County Council and Gov. Gary Herbert, respectively.

Newton is replacing District 3 Councilman David Wilde, who resigned Jan. 1 with a year left on his fourth term to take a job with the county district attorney's office. That position gives him access to county health insurance while he fights cancer.

Newton won with 48 votes out of 61. The other candidates for the spot were Casey Jackson, Wade Marshall Miller and Clark Bullen.

Newton is the former spokeswoman for the city of Taylorsville.

District 3 includes most of Murray and Taylorsville and parts of West Valley City, South Salt Lake and west Millcreek.

Spendlove, who was the top vote-getter among nine candidates, will serve the remaining time of Rep. Derek Brown's term. Brown has taken a job as deputy chief of staff and state director for Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah. Spendlove works for the governor's office.

District 49 covers parts of Sandy and Cottonwood Heights.
