Skyline swimming coach Joe Peirera has been named the National Federation of State High School Association's 2013 swimming and diving Coach of the Year.

The prestigious award recognizes one coach in 21 high school sports, meaning Peirera was the only swimming coach in the country to be honored this year.

Pereira has been Skyline's coach for nine years, during which time he's led the Eagles boys' teams to three state titles and the girls' team to six, according to a Granite School District news release.

Both Skyline boys' and girls' teams had a successful season in 2013. The girls won the Class 4A state title, blowing out the next best team, while the boys finished third, just 26.5 points behind champion Mountain Crest.

Pereira said much of his success has come because he's had athletes willing to put in the work to win, something that isn't always the case.

"Swimming is sort of 'old school,'" Pereira said in the release. "A lot of students today want things quicker, but you can't succeed in swimming unless you're willing to work hard every day."
