Utahns Against Common Core held a rally at the Utah Capitol on Tuesday evening as a kickoff to their efforts to expose the standards "as a system that treats Utah's children like political and corporate resources rather than as individuals born with unique talents and needs," according to a statement from the group.

The Common Core State Standards are math and language arts standards adopted by Utah and most other states. They outline the skills students should learn in each grade to be ready for college and careers, but don't provide curriculum.

The Utah state school board voted to adopt the standards in 2010 and they guide instruction in Utah schools. They were created as part of a states-led initiative.

Critics feel they are a product of federal interference in Utah schools and worry they won't lead to a high quality education for Utah children.
