I am disappointed, to say the least, in Rep. Rob Bishop's reaction to the president's protection of the Point Arena-Stornetta Public Lands and expansion of the California Coastal National Monument ("Obama trying to create national monuments in New Mexico and California," Tribune, Feb. 4).

I believe his statement is purely political, because here in Mendocino, local business groups, environmental interests, Native Americans, and political interests from all sides were thrilled with the president's use of the Antiquities Act.

This leadership will greatly help our local economy, create jobs and provide a beautiful place for people to enjoy for generations to come. I personally invite the congressman and his loved ones to come and see these lands for himself so he can appreciate, first-hand, the action taken by the president and its importance to all of us.
